Therapy for
Teens
Never a break!
Teens have it hard today. Keeping up with school, friends, relationships, family, and TikTok. Inside, they’re screaming, “MAKE IT STOP!”
They don’t know who they are… It’s hard to connect with friends (or make a friend)… And every time they look at their phone, it seems like the world’s coming to an end.
It’s a recipe for instability, anxiety, and fear.
You watch them isolate and become shells of who you know them to be. They’re struggling… and you know it. The fighting, crying, and panic attacks are breaking your heart. Of course, you want to reach them, but you don’t know how. You’re not trained for this; your every effort is only adding to the tension.
We get it.
We might not know all their lingo (we are working on it!), but we understand your teen’s issues and know how to help.
We will work with your teen to teach them emotion regulation skills, self-confidence, relationship skills, and self-soothing techniques. And if your teen is struggling with an eating disorder, we offer specialized services. We’ll connect you with a full support team to help you navigate their recovery.
Let us help with therapy so you can get back to doing what you do best: being their loving parent.
Three-Tiered Family Based Teen Therapy
Tier One: Therapy for the teen battling a Mental Health Diagnosis
At Stark Therapy Group, teens receiving support for their mental health diagnosis will be assigned their own individual therapist who specializes in treating depression, anxiety, trauma or OCD . Depending on the severity of the presenting issue and the level of support needed, teens typically meet with their therapist between 1-3 times/week. This is a non-judgmental, supportive space for the teen to explore issues with mood, distress around school, social stress, working through trauma, and more.
Our approach to treating teens:
Exploring root causes of the presenting issue, which may include factors like trauma, social pressures, injustices, unclear identity, emotional distress, etc.
We treat all presenting issues through a trauma-informed lens.
Cultural competence — Our therapists are constantly working to be culturally competent and aware of how societal attitudes identities such as race, gender, and sexual orientation may effect a persons mental wellbeing. We are willing to be wrong and seek repair when mistakes are made. YOU are the expert on your experiences and identities.
Collaborative treatment — We foster a therapeutic environment where the client is actively engaged in their recovery process empowers clients to make choices that align with their values and recovery goals.
Supportive environment — We work to create a supportive environment free from shame or blame, in hopes that our clients will feel able to share openly and honestly about their struggles and experiences with food and body.
Let us help your teen step into recovery and work through healing!
Tier Two: Therapy & parent coaching for caregivers of the teen with mental health struggles
As teen therapists, we've witnessed the significant toll it takes on parents to watch their child battle with their mental health. Under this tier of support, we offer therapy for the caregivers of the adolescent with depression, anxiety, OCD, and trauma.
In this space, parents/caregivers are offered the space to process what it’s like to have a child who is sick and struggling. While every family has different needs, parents usually see one of our Stark Therapy Group therapists on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule.
Support we offer to caregivers of teens:
Parent Coaching on how to support your child with a mental health diagnosis
Implementing harm-reduction strategies
Navigating the stress of school, social issues, and more
How to cultivate less chaos and more harmony in the home
Working through conflicts that came up during the week
Quelling any unrealistic expectations and help setting realistic expectations around what recovery looks like.
Couples Work — Some couples find that their relationship can suffer from the stress of having a child who is ill.
Grief work — No parent wants to watch their kid suffer through an illness. We find grief is a common experience for the parents we support.
Support around heightened emotions, anxiety and the desire for a “quick fix.”
Working through trauma that has happened during this process (ie: sending a child to a treatment center, unnecessary harm caused by other modalities, etc.).
The reality of recovery is that it comes with ebbs and flows. We’re here to help parents & caregivers stay grounded during the recovery process!
Tier Three: Therapy for whole family
The third and final tier of our umbrella system for supporting a teen through mental health recovery is family therapy.
Having a loved one with a mental illness can bring chaos and stress into the family unit. We encourage siblings to be included in family therapy sessions, recognizing that having a sibling battling with their mental health impacts the entire family and can create a perpetual sense of disorder at home. Siblings without a mental health struggle may feel overlooked while their sibling struggles with their illness.
Family therapy provides a space for everyone to be acknowledged and listened to, fostering a renewed sense of harmony within the home. Our therapists work with the entire family to reintroduce wellbeing and fun into the household. While each family and their needs are unique, families typically see their Stark Therapy Group therapist weekly or bi-weekly.
What to expect in family therapy:
Work on family dynamics
Repairing ruptures that have happened during this process
Foster healing through strengthening connection
Work to create safety in the home through the following:
Creating guidelines around topics that are “off limits” specific to recovery
Navigating times of stress
Establishing boundaries that work for every family member
Let us help your family move from chaos back to connection and fun!

Client Story
Tessa* hated everything. No one understands how awful it feels to be her. Her friends at school were callous, her teachers didn’t get it, and let’s not even get started on her family. Tessa felt anxious, angry, and overwhelmed. She spent all her time on her phone, absentmindedly scrolling, trying to disconnect and numb herself to the outside world. She started restricting her food, binging, and purging to feel some sense of control, but it’s hurting her.
Tessa* reached out for therapy, and things started not sucking as much. It wasn’t quick or easy, but it was definitely worth it! With the support of her therapist, a dietitian, and her doctor, Tessa was able to replace her destructive habits with more manageable and healthier coping skills. She learned to ground herself and feel present and safe in her body. Now she's more confident at school and has made friends that like her for her. Her parents also received support through parent coaching with Stark Therapy Group to help them learn how to best support her and create a more peaceful home environment!
